Red Bull Air Race Pilot Encourages Young Aviators

Nigel Lamb

Nigel Lamb would like to thank everyone at Wycombe Air Park, Booker for the use of their excellent facilities and patience while he hosted UK Air Cadets and took competition winner Jonny Beech flying in his MX2 aircraft.

The Breitling Air Race Team, together with the Air Cadet Organisation challenged cadets to design a good-luck emblem for the 2010 Red Bull Air Race World Championships and the two age categories were won by; Jonny Beech, 17yrs from Shepton Mallet, and Natalie Fields, 14yrs from Neston. Local cadets supported the event and were delighted to meet Nigel and have a close up look at his two MX aircraft. (MX2 & MXS-R)

Natalie had a guided tour of the powerful MXS -R and while sitting in the cockpit of the American built aircraft, Natalie said, "this has been a fantastic opportunity. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Nigel and his team. Thank you and good luck for 2010" Being too young to fly in the aircraft, Natalie was presented with a rare Breitling sweatshirt. In a surprise exchange, she presented Nigel with a personalised 2375 Sqn polo shirt.

However, Jonny Beech did get the amazing opportunity to fly with Nigel in his MX2. Jonny was so relaxed and comfortable at the controls, Nigel allowed him with full display smoke to 'loop' and 'roll' over the airfield in front of fellow air cadets and his father Martin. Jonny was delighted with the flight and the opportunity to take control of the race machine valued over £200k "I really didn't expect that! it was quite unlike anything I have ever flown".

"A great opportunity to meet young aviators and show them an element of flying very different from the military and commercial routes." said Nigel. "I remember how I felt at that age so it's great to be able to give something back. The message to get across is, that it's worth aiming high because you have nothing to lose by trying and you'll often be surprised by how simple the path can be with enough passion and the right training"
